My Fiancé’s Cousin Nick plays in a band called Leland Sundries. He also calls himself Leland Sundries when he’s playing by himself. He and I have shared the stage a few times over the last year or so. Nick’s Home base is Brooklyn, NY and when he was able to book a gig at the Pine Box Rock Shop, he asked me if I wanted to play.
Nick booked six acts (including him and I) to play a benefit for the National Organization for Women. On the late Morning of the 24th, My Fiancé and I drove down to New Haven, CT and took the Metro to Manhattan. From there it was about a 25 minute ride on the subway and then a ten minute walk to the Brooklyn neighborhood where Nick resides.
Nick was going on that night as a duo with his girlfriend Laney. They are called “Laney and Nick“.
The club is called The Pine Box Rock Shop and is located in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. I have heard good and bad things about this area, but I didn’t see anything crazy. I was tired and not paying too much attention during the ride.
It was a very warm February 24th. It was almost 70 degrees during the day. The club doors were open because of the great weather. We walked into a very long bar that ended before a ramp. We walked up the ramp and into this medium sized room. A soundboard and stage there. There were some tables and chairs.
I went on 4th of 6th. The first band was called “Alice and the Underground“. They were a really nice Country influenced band.
The second band was Ryan Lee Crosby. He is a blues musician from Boston. He plays an acoustic 12 string and another acoustic guitar in a strange tuning that makes it sounds like a sitar. Joining Ryan onstage was a harmonic player and this guy rubbing and banging on a round plastic thing to keep the beat. He wore rings on his fingers, which added to the “drum” sound.
Laney and Nick went on next. Nick played guitar and harmonica and Laney sang and played a bit of guitar too. People dug them. It was good.
I went on next. I was the only one who went on by himself. I played about 1/2 hour and people paid attention.
Boy Jr went on next. Fronted by this really cool girl who wrote good songs. They were so young. They are from upstate.
Last but not least was Curtis J Social. They are a duo (guitar and drums). They were cool and trippy.
I sold a CD and gave out a few. I had a great time.
